I feel disconnected from the blogging world this week - please forgive me! Thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes while my family was so sick. We appreciate you so much!
It's been all I can do to try and keep up. My children have an enormous stack of make-up work from being out with the Swine Flu, and I've been working on a four page Spanish take-home exam, and a paper for my Rhetorical Studies class. Only six more weeks and this semester will be over! In between classes and homework, I've started my online Christmas shopping. In the past few years, I've finished over 75% of my shopping online. It saves so much time and around this time of year, many stores offer free shipping too.
I was doing a bit of shopping at Barnes & Noble when I discovered Nook. For some reason Kindle doesn't attract my attention but this little gadget does. It retails for a whopping $260. Anybody else heard anything about it? I must admit that I'm intrigued. I spend so much time in transit that it would be easy to cart around, wouldn't it? I know what you are thinking - you're thinking, NO! But I don't think these sort of gadgets will ever replace books. On the contrary, I believe that even more people will be reading and publishers will be buying even more manuscripts. Perhaps I'm an optimist, but technology is addicting and technology sells.
Take me, for example. I never thought I'd use an ipod in a million years. I mean after all, I have a perfectly good radio in my car - why would I use that thing? But my father in love gave me a mac-daddy Apple ipod Classic for Christmas last year and I LOVE that thing. It will hold thousands of songs, and I love listening commercial free. I think that the Kindle and the Nook will catch on in the same way. People are always going to curl up with a book. I for one love the feel and the smell of a new book. But the Kindle and the Nook make reading convenient when you're not at home, and anything that boosts our industry is a good thing. And one more thing, it sure would make my back pack lighter! What are your thoughts? Do any of you own or use one of these devices?

I just got a Kindle for my b-day, and I love the thing. Absolutely LOVE it! I love it most for reading manuscripts I'm critiquing. I can take it anywhere, I love reading off the screen, and I can add notes and highlight stuff. So for critiquing it's great. No using mountains of paper and gallons of ink. And I live in the boonies and am 3 hours away from a bookstore, so for me, it's so great to see a book I want to read and get it in less than a minute. I never thought I would go for this thing, but I love it! LOL, I sound like a commercial. :D
I don't own one, but when I saw it on a B&N e-mail, I was actually half-intrigued ... it looked like you'd actually be able to read the words in a decent size! :) And, you're right ... definitely lighter for the backpack, purse, briefcase, etc.!
Hope you are feeling better and better with each hour and your kids! I am not sure if I would buy one yet--like you, I love the feel of a good book! And the smell!
I don't own one but I too can see some benefits. I just hope digital reading doesn't replace real books--that would be sad.
Amy,
I really, don't want a kindle or any other reading device. I'm just a book-in-my-hand type of gal. I spend WAY too much time online as it is. I have ocular migraines when I spend too much time at the computer (NaNo isn't helping, either), so a handheld reading device would NOT be good for me! ;)
BUT...I hope you enjoy the Nook if you get one!
hugs,
Donna
I only have a couple of books on my iPod Touch, but I like reading from its B&N e-reader app.
I'm not much into gadgets, so I don't have either one. Maybe someday. Have fun with yours and good luck with your classes.
It's already on my Christmas wish list. Sending up a prayer!
I don't have one, but I'm asking for one for Christmas.
I don't even like reading my newspaper on a computer screen, and I do, but I am drawing the line at books on screen...(for now ;))
Ahh the gadgets one can look forward to learning about. I've never heard of a Nook. I have an iPod. I use it when I walk and when I work out. I also had a situation at work where my workmate and I just weren't getting along and so I listened to my iPod during the day. I love to read. I have a hunch I'd love this gadget.
I don't have any of those things, but they do sound intriguing. A writer friend has kindle and brought it to one of our meetings. (We meet to analyze published books to see what those authors are doing right.) Anyway, she was a bit frustrated, because you can't refer to page whatever on Kindle (since paging varies with type and type size). So everytime she wanted to point out something she liked, she'd have to browse through lots of pages to find the passage. Other than that, I think she likes it.
I agree that no matter how much the digital age simplifies access to reading, hand held books and libraries will never go out. It's a completely different sense of pleasure. Meanwhile, like you, Amy, I think anything that encourages reading supports writers.
Sounds like you are super busy. I have no special electronic devices. I actually wish I didn't have to have a TV or cell phone either, but we have to go along with the times. Have a great weekend! :O)
I have mixed emotions about e-readers. Like you I can see where they are beneficial but ...
No answers or solutions from this part of the peanut gallery, unfortunately.
I don't have one because I am hoping the price on these gadgets will eventually come down. I love the idea of them though.
Hi!
I'm so glad that you all are feeling better!!!
I still need to read the instruction books on the gadgets that I have...in my free time.
Blessings & enjoy yours!!
I'd hold off till after the first of the year when Apple and others have their "iPad" offerings on the table for comparison.

I don't own either gadget but I've heard rave reviews on both. Mostly I read either in bed at night or while waiting in a doctor's office.
